Dear friends,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

First of all, if you received a weird, discombobulated email this morning wishing you a happy October I am SO sorry! Somehow an old draft was automatically sent to my entire list, and I apologize for the inconvenience. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Instead, may I wish you a Happy November? Here in Colorado, winter has arrived and we had our first big snowfall over the weekend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As we enter the season of holidays and festivities, I’ve shared some of my best easy Thanksgiving recipes below. You’ll also find 40 creative ideas for low-cost Christmas gifts your recipients will love, plus one of my family’s favorite dinner recipes. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

On a personal note, I confess I wasn’t thrilled about snow last weekend because it meant saying goodbye to the dahlia garden. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This was my first year growing dahlias, and after a cold, wet spring they began blooming in September and were magnificent. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The flowers were still gorgeous last week, and I was not excited about the hard frost in the forecast. We’d had a glorious, extended autumn for which I should have been wholly grateful, but I was in a funk. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then over the weekend I discovered a fun article from Kelly at the Montana Happy blog, “31 Winter Hygge Ideas<\/a>.” Hygge<\/em>, as you may know, is the Danish concept that loosely means “coziness and comfort.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Following Kelly’s suggestions, I put on my softest flannel shirt, got some new library books to read, made a pot of homemade soup<\/a>, turned on the fireplace, and snuggled under a blanket on the couch. Soon the blues faded away as the snowflakes drifted down. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I still felt a twinge of sadness when I saw the dahlias’ blackened stems after the snow, but now it’s time for the tubers to rest. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I think I’m ready to embrace the slower pace of winter, too — the quiet darkness, the soft moments, and the comfort of nature’s seasons and cycles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
